What Is Facial Rejuvenation?Facial rejuvenation is a class of non-invasive treatments used to restore your youthful countenance. Whether your skin is damaged from the sun, an injury, or the effects of aging, there are several treatments that can help. These include chemical peels, dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, microneedling, PRP therapy, neuromodulators and fillers and customized facials.
Chemical PeelsChemical peels are one of the most popular facial rejuvenation methods because deep peels can exfoliate the skin deeper than dermaplaning. While it can be used to exfoliate the neck or hands, this treatment is usually applied to the face. The acid in the chemical peel exfoliates the skin and is peeled off gently. The result is healthy, rejuvenated skin that is smoother than the old skin. There are three primary types of chemical peels.
“Lunchtime” PeelA “lunchtime” peel, also known as a superficial chemical peel, is made up of alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild acid. It only penetrates and exfoliates the outer, or superficial, layer of the skin. It’s often used to enhance the appearance of rough, ruddy skin and mild discoloration.
Medium PeelMedium chemical peels involve trichloroacetic or glycolic acid and penetrates both the superficial and middle layers of the skin. The results exfoliation removes damaged skin cells and is potent enough to treat moderate skin discoloration.
It is also commonly used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and reduce age spots and freckles. In some cases, our clients use medium chemical peels to smooth rough skin and treat certain precancerous skin growths, such as actinic keratosis.
Deep PeelDeep chemical peels use trichloroacetic acid or phenol to penetrate the middle layer of the skin deeply. This removes more damaged skin cells than medium chemical peels. Deep peels are used to eliminate large freckles, age spots, moderate lines and shallow scars. The resulting facial rejuvenation is dramatic.
DermaplaningPrimarily, dermaplaning is used to rid your face of “peach fuzz”, or vellus hairs. However, this ‘”shaving” treatment also doubles as a facial rejuvenation treatment. When you shave at home, you’re only removing hair from their follicles. When you receive a dermaplaning treatment from a dermatologist, the blade also removes a superficial layer of dead skin.
The brightening effect of this facial rejuvenation treatment is immediate. However, it also allows makeup to go on smoother and helps skin-care products sink in better. This entire treatment only takes around 15 minutes. But if you get one before other treatments, like microdermabrasion or ablative lasers, the results are enhanced drastically.
MicrodermabrasionMicrodermabrasion is used to enhance both skin tone and texture. Whether your face is dull and ruddy from acne rosacea or you spent years on the beach without sunscreen, microdermabrasion can help. Here are just a few things microdermabrasion can help with:
- Age spots and brown spots
- Acne and acne scars
- Lifeless complexion
- Uneven skin tone and texture
- Sun damage
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Blackheads and enlarged pores
MicroneedlingMicroneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is used to reduce the visibility of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars. This popular treatment works by stimulating the collagen and elastin already in your skin. It is ideal for anyone looking for skin rejuvenation, regardless of skin tone or type. Treatments are short and there is no downtime, so you can get straight back to your busy life. Microneedling is most effective when you receive treatments every four to six weeks.
NeuromodulatorsNeuromodulators, known commercially as Xeomin, Dysport and Botox Cosmetic, are wrinkle-relaxing injections of botulinum toxin. They are used to treat crow’s feet, frown lines and wrinkles by relaxing hyperactive facial muscles. Like microneedling, Botox treatments are quick. However, treatments last three to six months.
It was once thought that your body develops a tolerance to the neurotoxin in Botox. Treatments would become less effective and more frequent treatments would be required. Luckily, the opposite is true. Botox and similar treatments relax hyperactive muscles in your face. The less active these muscles are, the weaker they become. As a result, lines and wrinkles are slower to reappear, and you will need fewer treatments.
FillersHyaluronic acid is one of the most popular dermal fillers to rejuvenate the face. It’s sold under well-known brand names, such as Restylane and Juvederm. Hyaluronic acid injections enhance the contour of the skin and reduce depressions caused by scars, injury and age lines. Here is just some of what this treatment can do:
- Reduce frown lines
- Add volume to the cheeks
- Treat acne scars
- Smooth burn scars and wound scars
- Smooth worry lines
- Eliminate smoker’s lines
- Treat marionette lines
PRPPRP, short for platelet-rich plasma, is an innovative technique used to minimize wrinkles and facial lines. A PRP facial combines the plasma and platelets in your blood with other rejuvenation techniques to trigger collagen production. To create platelet-rich plasma, a small sample of your blood is spun in a centrifuge to extract the protein-dense plasma. Then, the platelets are extracted, and the sample is concentrated.
During treatment, the plasma is spread on your face first. Then, you will receive a microneedling treatment to help your skin absorb the protein-rich plasma. While PRP therapy is primarily used by orthopedic surgeons to promote joint and bone recovery, the same healing properties work wonders on your skin.
Custom FacialsFacials are an essential component of your skincare regimen. Custom facials promote improved circulation underneath your skin and lymphatic drainage. Custom facials provide the added benefit of relaxing your facial muscles.
With regular treatment, facials can slow the onset of wrinkles, minimize puffiness, tighten the skin and improve your skin tone. When you come in for your initial consultation, we will help you create a personalized facial to address all your concerns.
Non-Surgical FaceliftA non-surgical facelift is an excellent alternative for people who want to shave years off their face but do not want to undergo an invasive medical procedure. We are proud to perform liquid facelifts with Miracu PDO threads by ApolloMed. Currently, these are the only FDA-approved threads approved for any area of the face. These unique sutures are made of polydioxanone and absorbed by your body naturally over time. Benefits of this treatment include:
- Minimizing wrinkles
- Enhancing your natural contours
- Promoting a more youthful countenance
- Tightening and lifting loose skin
This treatment is often combined with other aesthetic treatments. For example, if you struggle with volume loss in your cheeks, it can be combined with hyaluronic acid or PRP therapy treatments.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is Botox Right for Me?Botox is right for men and women who wish to reverse the signs of aging in the face without extensive downtime. Treatment is quick, painless and the results can be seen in three to four days. More importantly, you only need two to four treatments per year.
2. Are Dermal Fillers Right for Me?Dermal fillers are right for men and women who are experiencing significant volume loss, fine lines or wrinkles. Juvederm Volbella is ideal for adults with thin lips, thinning around the mouth and vertical lip lines. Juvederm Ultra is also used to augment the lips and smooth the surrounding skin. However, this formulation provides more noticeable results.
Juvederm Voluma is ideal for people who want to lift their cheeks subtly, increase volume and contour the cheek area. Juvederm Vollure is right for anyone looking to treat moderate-to-severe folds or facial wrinkles. It is extremely similar to the original Juvederm formulation. The primary difference is it can last up to twice as long.
3. Is Microneedling Right for Me?If you’re looking for a safe, effective treatment to promote collagen production without downtime, microneedling might be right for you. While you may need four treatments to achieve the best results, prep and treatment usually take under two hours. During your initial consultation, we will talk to you about your overall health, lifestyle, and any acne medications you are taking to determine if this is the best rejuvenation treatment for you.
4. Can I Do Microneedling at Home? Some people are tempted to try microneedling at home to save a little money. However, we recommend against this. When you use a home roller, your skin is barely punctured at all. The results are barely noticeable and not worth your money or time.
Minimal penetration may sound like a “less painful” option. However, when performed at a board-certified dermatologist’s office, microneedling does not hurt. A local anesthetic is applied to your face to ensure you feel no pain or discomfort during or immediately after treatment.
The most significant problem with at-home microneedling is the potential risks. First, the FDA views these devices as cosmetic rather than medical. Thus, they are not held to the same rigorous standards of safety and efficacy. Second, the needles attached to the device may not be sterile. This can lead to allergic reactions, infections and other unintended consequences.
The only way to receive a guaranteed safe, effective microneedling treatment is to get one by a board-certified dermatologist. Our office, along with our medical-grade equipment, is sterile. Our dermatologists are educated, well-trained, skilled and certified. We will make sure you get the results you need and deserve in a safe, comfortable environment.
5. Am I a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?Dermaplaning is often seen as a better rejuvenation treatment than microdermabrasion. The latter involves removing dead skin cells by making tiny abrasions on the superficial layer of the skin. These abrasions smooth out fine lines, treat mild discolorations and open clogged pores. However, it may not be ideal for people with highly sensitive skin.
On the other hand, dermaplaning is ideal for anyone, including those with sensitive skin. This treatment is popular among women because it removes vellus hair and turns skin into the perfect canvas for makeup and skincare products. However, men can benefit from this treatment, too. By gently removing dead skin cells, it opens up clogged pores. This makes hydrating skincare products, prescription acne medications, and other products more effective.
More importantly, dermaplaning exfoliates your skin. This allows you to look younger, improves pigmentation, hydrates dry skin, minimizes acne scars and much more. During your initial consultation, we will assess your skin type and advise you on how often you should exfoliate to keep your skin looking hydrated, radiant and youthful.
